1, 2, 3…Restart

I’ve been remiss and let this blog stagnate just as I didn’t want to happen.

Today I am starting the second week of a three week break.  SU and I halfway through a much needed, and almost completely cost free, vacation in Mexico (you might want to know that paradise apparently has wi-fi :)).  Hopefully this will help a horrid three week break be of better use!  I know most people would love a three week break, but it is way too long.  With nursing school, one week is great, a chance to unwind, let go and recharge.  Two can be good as you can start to get ahead, or catch up, in anticipation of returning.  By the third week your routine and the rhythm that you created in the first half of the semester are completely destroyed and you return to classes feeling completely ignorant and like a white boy dancing.

The semester started off feeling as if we were salmon swimming to the spawn.  Our class started a week later than all the others (if you think three weeks will throw havoc in your craw, you should see what five to six weeks will do!) and from that point everything has been at a frantic pace.  Unfortunately the hindsight of administration seeing the mistake in that late start doesn’t help the fact that they are pressured to get all of their lecture in and the deadlines of most everything is frantic.  As SU says, “Welcome to nursing school…FINALLY!”

With that, any time I had beyond preparation and assignments and clinical was usually spent with more preparation and/or much needed rest.  But now, having had a couple of pampering treatments, several days of vitamin D therapy (sun worshipping that is) and surf mixed gently with margarita’s-con-tequila-anejo, I’m recharged.  Not quite caught up, yet be ahead, but at least recharged.

I’ve also treated myself to some great mind-candy reading.  I’m a fan of the J.B. Stanley “A Supper Club” mysteries, and with all those being out of stock at the library I picked up the initial book from her other series, “A Collectible Mystery” and was delightfully surprised.  The fun easy read was littered with some terrific literary devices that left me wanting for the rest of the series.  I also devoured (all pun intended) Cleaving by Julie Powell.  I never read or saw Julie and Julia (though I did finally see the movie a couple of weeks ago) but several reviews and discussions made Cleaving intriguing.  After months on waiting lists to get the book from the library I claimed it in time to pack it with my swim trunks.  It was more than worth the wait and a highly recommended must read.

All this has given me time and distraction to improve mentally and physically with anticipation of being able to maintain this electronic tome through the remaining part of the semester and beyond.

Welcome back to me and you!

One Response to “1, 2, 3…Restart”

  1. Glad that you are back. I was wondering where you went and how things were going. I know what you mean about breaks. Short ones are just enough to get your recharged, long ones are too long and leave you going stir crazy.

Hope to hear more from you soon!
